The Florida Democratic Party “Jefferson-Jackson” dinner and subsequent state meeting in Fort Lauderdale was quite an event and very successful.
Saturday 6/11 was a day devoted to and co-sponsored by the Young Democrats and was attended by Suanne McLaughlin our Statecommitteewoman and Youth Coordinator.
The early evening was dominated by “hospitality suites” that were sponsored by the three gubernatorial candidates: Scott Maddox, Rod Smith and Jim Davis. We were able to meet and greet the candidates and speak one-on-one with each and get some insight into their positions. I had a few words with a prior candidate, Bill McBride, now chairman of Hyde Park Capital of Tampa. The dinner was as good as can be for $125.00 and I was able to spend it with our St. Lucie neighbors at their table.
The three gubernatorial candidates were introduced, as was Senator Bill Nelson by Karen Thurman, our very capable new leader of the Party. Senator Nelson in turn introduced the key speaker of the night, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware. Senator Biden spoke for 45 minutes; I could have listened to him for another hour. What a dynamic, presidential personality he is. And even though we invited him, he did send his regrets as he will not be able to make it here for our Gala on November 5th.
Sundays’ meetings were eventful; Ed Matson, State Committeeman and member of the Central Committee arrived with Valerie Jones, Vice Chair at 7AM in plenty of time to vote in our interest regarding the rules for the upcoming December convention in Orlando. In fact, it was Ed’s point of order in the meeting that turned down the vote to eliminate some of the convention delegates.
During a noon break, Valerie buttonholed Senator Nelson and he agreed to appear as a speaker at our November 5th Gala. Great work Val, you succeeded where I tried and failed. All in all I’d say we had a productive weekend.
